A visa is NOT available at the border.

You can only get a visa at a Kyrgyzstan embassy or on arrival at the Manas International Airport in Bishkek. As much as it would be nice to just travel on through without need for visa preparation in advance, it is just not possible. There are no visa admitting services at any border checkpoint, although there is something to be said about the power of money in the former Soviet Republics.

Bring dollars to pay for visa on arrival.

It is quite possible to get your visa on arrival at the Manas International Airport in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, but to make sure that the process runs as smooth as possible, be sure to bring some U.S. dollars. After exiting the airplane, the visa can be applied for in the passport and customs area. Most visas require payment in American dollars and having those on you will make the process much easier.

Leave sufficient time when applying at embassy.

You may have flights and all the necessary reservations set for your travel to Kyrgyzstan, but none of that will matter if you passport is still at the embassy waiting for a visa. If applying to an embassy by mail, calculate extra waiting time for posting and delivery, and if applying in person, calculate extra waiting time in respect to business and weekend days.

Getting a Kyrgyzstan visa to travel Kyrgyzstan’s beautiful country is not hard, and if done correctly, will not cause any trouble whatsoever. Just make sure to follow the rules depending on when and where you plan to apply, and definitely try to avoid these silly visa mistakes!
